Coalporters Regatta Report 2015

Posted on Posted in 2015 race reports

With three titles still to be decided, Coalporters Regatta lived up to expectations with drama in the Mens Junior Sculls first round tie when Championship leader Joe Fuccio was disqualified for failing complete his turn correctly as his boat slid over the top of the buoy half way through his turn, making his main rival, Joe Murray of Shanklin, task in the final just that little bit easier when he lined up against Jack Williams of Coalporters and outsider Steve Johnson of Ryde, needing the win to draw level on points for the Championship.

A good start, with each sculler looking well matched as they progressed to the turning buoys, each watching the other, causing the Coalporters Sculler to make a sudden alteration to his course to take his rightful buoy. Steve Johnson of Ryde was first around followed by Joe Murray with Coalporters mistake dropping Jack Williams back a length. Shanklin, rowing well, got back on terms with Ryde, taking the Coalporters Sculler with him and with 300m to go forged ahead to win by four lengths and secure a row off place with Joe Fuccio for the Junior Sculls Championship now with four point each

Next came the Ladies Masters with BTC, matched against Southampton and Championship Leaders Christchurch, needing the point to keep their Championship hopes alive. A good start by both BTC and Southampton saw them half a length ahead but as the settled Christchurch move through to gain a length and a half as they shaped for their buoy, with BTC and Southampton still level. Christchurch moved further ahead with an excellent turn and BTC pushed clear of Southampton. A big effort from BTC over the final 200m closed the leaders down to 1 length with Southampton 11/2 further back making Christchurch the first Ladies Master Champions.

The Mens Novice Fours saw Southampton with W Johnson, T Forrest, J Woad, H Fryer (Stk) L Redwood (Cox) gain the Club’s first mens fours win of the season with with four lengths to spare over Christchurch. Westover, with R Shaw, J Williams, J Solly, J Kay (Stk), won the closest finish of the day in the Mens Junior Fours, with just 1 foot separating them from Christchurch.

The remaining Championship Title to be decided came in the Mens Junior Senior Final with Westover and Poole both on 5 points, in the expected final starting line up with the end of season in form Newport. From the start it looked to be Poole who had the advantage as they settled after 300m but as they passed the Umpires Position just before the turns, it was Westover who had forced their bow in front as Newport closed down on Poole. A good turn by Westover put them further ahead to lead by 2 length as the headed home with Poole and Newport trying to raise their game. With 200m remaining L Darlow, J Hanaford, M Joscelyne, A Esinduy (Stk) L Callaghan (Cox) of Westover, 3 lengths of Newport were starting to relax, crossing the line with 2 1/2 lengths to spare and Champions.

The final race of the day, the Twice Around the Course Senior Fours Final, saw Champions Itchen Imperial, Wayne Harrison, Andreas Bator, Mark Wardell, Tom Foad (Stk) Robyn McGregor – Ritchie (Cox), line up against BTC and Coalporters to give an exhibition of controlled rowing from the start. Settling into a 1 length lead they looked Champions all the way, despite both Coalporters and BTC giving it their all, keeping in contact with excellent buoy turns. Urge on by the supporters the three crews were briefly overlapping as the swung around the second turn but baring accidents there was no doubt as to the eventual winners with Itchen taking the applause four lengths clear of Coalporters and BTC.

The Row Off for the Junior Sculls Championship between Murray of Shanklin and Fuccio of Newport took place on the Itchen over the Dock Head to Itchen Bridge Course on Sunday Morning. Fuccio took an early lead and at the half way mark led by three clear lengths, only to be wound in, stroke by stroke, and Passed by Murray with 200m remaining for him to win by the same distance to become the Champion Junior Sculler.
