Isle of Wight Regattas 2017

Posted on Posted in 2017 Race Reports

A nasty crosswind at Ryde and an increasing swell at Shanklin tested both novice and experienced rowers at this seasons opening coastal regattas at Ryde and Shanklin.

Itchen Imperial once again set the standard for senior oarsmen with 3 length to spare at Ryde and a more convincing 8 lengths at Shanklin. James Foad, now retired from International rowing, adding a touch of class to an already strong crew, although an unexpected capsize when leading in the Senior Sculls Final earlier in the day at Shanklin is something he’ll want to quickly forget.

Strong crews from both Christchurch and Bournemouth were undefeated at both regattas in the mens Junior Senior and Junior events as were Poole Masters A crew, winning by a canvas at Ryde and a more convincing 2 lengths at Shanklin. Mens Novice racing was well contested with Christchurch taking line honours at Ryde, and Coalporters B passing Southampton A in a sprint finish to win by 2 lengths at Shanklin.

Coalporters Senior Ladies remain unbeaten and Southampton and BTC shared the points in the Ladies Masters whilst Ryde claimed the points at both regattas in the Ladies Junior Fours with convincing wins over Itchen Imperial and Christchurch. Daisy Faithful had a good start to the season winning both regatta points in the Ladies Junior Sculls and Southampton’s Lou Florence, after winning the Novice event at Ryde, was well pleased with second places at both regattas when moving up to Junior.

This week racing returns to the more placid waters of Southampton with Itchen Imperial hosting their 30th Annual Regatta at Crosshouse Hard staring at 10am.
