Poole Town Rowing Regatta 2015

Posted on Posted in 2015 race reports

Without doubt the best Mens Senior Fours Final of the year so far as the Coalporters’ P Spratt, J Taw, T Symes, L Schaffer(Stk) matched Championship leaders Itchen Imperial A stroke for stroke. At the start it was the Itchen Four who settled first but only 1/2 a length separated the two crews with Poole third, being chased by BTC and Itchen B. Into the their turns with just one stroke between them as the Itchen A crew and the Coalporters buried their oars in the water, spinning their boats around the buoys. Up first were the Championship Leaders, with Coalporters less than a canvas behind, putting in an extended burst, gradually pulling level once more. For the next 300 meters both crews raced side by side but it was the Coalporters who lifted their rate first to gain 1/2 a length as they passed their ecstatic supporters, pushing on to cross the finishing line with 3/4 of a length to spare. A comfortable win for the Itchen Imperial Senior Ladies Four Champions K Taylor, J Bull, R McGregor – Ritchie, K McGregor – Ritchie (Stk) A Walton (Cox) secured their eighth win of the season and for their Mens Masters +40 crew S Taylor, R Benham, L Rayment, I Barnaby (Stk) O Barnaby (Cox) who now lead their Championship with six wins to three over Poole was, no doubt, some consolation but the Itchen Senior Men, leading the championship table by six points to the Coalporters two, may well be looking at the weather forecast for the re-arranged Lymington Regatta at Milford on Sea this coming Saturday as the Coalporters will no doubt be fancying their chances, with four Regattas remaining and the chances of a row off for the championship title.

The BTC club had both joy and disappointment in equal measure, their Ladies Novice Four, Claire Whiting, Harriet Borg-Bartolo, Holly Cook, Kayleigh Nutman (Stk), were delighted winning by two lengths after Coxswain Sophie Maxwell put them in the lead with an excellent turn but disappointment for their Ladies Masters who finished a canvas behind Christchurch who now share their Championship lead with four points each with the Southampton Ladies third on one point.
