The Portsmouth Grand Challenge Cup headed back to the Coast ARA as Hants and Dorset Crews failed to match Herne Bay in a disappointing Senior final.

Itchen Imperial were first to show after a ragged start, which the Starter did well to control. Closely followed by Bexhill and Herne Bay in the favoured inside positions, Itchen Imperial, starting at number 8, and Deal A AT 10 moved inside as far as possible but it was the Herne Bay Crew who were first around their buoy, two lengths clear of the field, with BTC A and Deal A taking up the running. Itchen and Bexhill still in with a shout, but it was Herne Bay’s race as the pulled away to a commanding lead, crossing the finishing line with 8 lengths to spare over Itchen who fought back to hold off Deal A by half a length to take second place. In the Mens Junior Fours, Hants and Dorset Champions Christchurch dominated their final from the start, turning it into an exhibition row as they broke their rate down to almost a paddle over the final 150 metres leaving Deal A and Poole B to decide the places.

The Ladies Races kept the Hants and Dorset flag flying high with Itchen Imperial and BTC Senior Ladies matching each other stroke for stroke with only half a length separating them as they crossed the finishing line and this after the initial race had been stopped at the turns for what appeared to be a minor infringement when BTC, who were not involved held at least a two length lead.

As expected, Southampton +40 Ladies Masters had a comfortable win to tie up the Hants and Dorset Championship, and Sonia Buss, Katy Wood, Lou Florence, Linzi Sadler (Stk) Wendy Hartland (Cox), Southampton’s in form Ladies Junior Four gained their first win of the season in style after fighting off challenges from Ryde and Shoreham at the turns and a big effort half way back broke Champions Poole who had threatened their lead put Southampton a length ahead. Poole had no answer to Southampton’s final push for the line which took them three lengths clear for their first championship point and a South Coast Championship place to fight for.
