Swanage Rowing Regatta Report 2016

Posted on Posted in 2016 race reports

BTC’s Adam Ratcliffe continued his unbeaten run to become this seasons undisputed Hants and Dorset Mens Junior Champion Sculler…

… with seven straight wins when holding off both Dale Buckett from Ryde and Harry Miselback from Shanklin in a closely fought battle at Swanage on Saturday. With nothing to choose between the three as they came away from the turns both Buckett and Miselbach put in spirited efforts to take a lead but Ratcliffe stuck to his task with dogged determination to pull clear in the final 100 metres to win by 1 length over Ryde with Shanklin a canvas behind in third place.

The first appearance of last seasons Senior Champions Itchen Imperial added spice to what has been a rather lacklustre Championship so far this season. Feeling their way off the start Itchen moved into an early lead over last weeks winners Ryde, but at the turn all six finalist were thought to be in contention, with Itchen quite content to sit on their 1 length lead. Applying pressure as they headed back Itchen increased their lead followed by Christchurch and BTC A. Still rowing well within themselves Itchen gave a glimpse of what Senior rowing is all about, raising their rate to finish six lengths ahead of current Championship leaders BTC A with Christchurch a length down third as they crossed the finishing line. With five Mens Senior Championship points still up for grabs Itchen could still mount a serious challenge to BTC’s three point lead.

As expected Christchurch continued their dominance in the Mens Junior and Junior/Senior Fours and Itchen’s Senior Ladies remain undefeated, winning by just over l length from BTC A who pushed them all the way.

In the Ladies Novice Sculls Southampton’s Lou Florence gained a well deserved win after passing both Christchurch and Poole with an excellent turn and a determined finish she stretched her lead to 4 lengths over Charlotte Codery of Christchurch with Perry of Coalporters moving into third place.

Next Saturday Championship Rowing goes to Bournemouth, west of the Pier at Durley Chine. 9am – 6PM.
