Woolston Rowing Regatta 2017

Itchen Imperial continued to dominate Hants and Dorset rowing at Woolston Regatta held at the Southampton Weston Shore on Saturday,

winning six of the main events, tightening their grasp of the Mens Senior Fours with five Championship Points to the one point held by Christchurch, and the Mens Junior Fours with J Bignell, L O’Toole, J Cracknell, O Starkey(Stk) extending their lead to four points to Bournemouth’s two.  Whilst in the Senior Sculls James Foad and Jess Bull continue to lead their Championships by four and five points respectively.

The BTC +40 Ladies extended their Championship lead to three points with K Bourke, K Koniec, E Nicholls, L Mould (Stk) C Weaver (Cox) brushing aside last week’s three feet defeat at Swanage with a convincing Three Lengths victory and Coalporters Senior Ladies L Garth, L Cruse, R Walczak E Barlett (Strk) P Budd (Cox) extended their unbeaten run to six very convincing wins Whilst Itchen Imperial Novice ladies looking for their first win had just a slice of good fortune. Following a good start Bournemouth A and B crews were Just ahead, and at the turn their A Crew was first to turn their buoy with Itchen pressing hard. With 200 Mtrs remaining Itchen moved ahead  and in the effort to get back on term the Bournemouth bow came off her as Itchen pull a length clear for their first win.

Conditions at Woolston on Saturday were challenging to say the least and it was thanks to Race Starters K Warland and Martin Bradbeer, Umpires and Assistant Officials and in no small measure down to crew discipline  that drew spontaneous applause from Spectator when they lined up ten Mens Senior Pairs, which are notoriously difficult to keep in a straight line, equally spaced and within less than two feet of each other for a first time start. On the way to the turning buoys the inside crews did get blown off line but each crew took their allocated buoy with Championship leaders M Wardell and L Williams first to turn with a slight lead over Lymington A.  Keeping an eye on BTC B on the outside of the course,  Itchen eased ahead as Shanklin made a challenge but at the finish it was Itchen Imperial A one and a half lengths clear of BTC B with Shanklin in third place.

Next Regatta will be Coalporters Regatta held on 1st July on the River Itchen at Northam Starting at 9-30am.
